Discovering Indonesia’s National Identity
Timtania Lasyana Graceli

During this field trip, Grade 5 and 6 students of SD Kristen Calvin visited two museums related to their classroom learning. Through these visits, students were encouraged to deepen their understanding while learning to recognize and appreciate their identity as Indonesians.

At the Museum of the Formulation of the Proclamation of Independence (Munasprok), students learned about the process of drafting the Proclamation of Independence and saw firsthand the rooms and historical objects associated with this important moment in Indonesia’s history. They also visited an underground bunker that was once used as a shelter.

Next, at the Textile Museum, students explored the process of fabric making, learned about various plants that can be used to produce natural dyes, and discovered different types of batik from across the Indonesian archipelago. Beyond learning, they also had the opportunity to create their own batik and take their finished pieces home.

Through this field trip, students learned about Indonesia’s national identity through the history of the nation’s struggle for independence and its rich cultural heritage. May this experience nurture their love for Indonesia and inspire them to become a generation that contributes to the nation’s future.
